A website that helps participants buy and sell used items; has apartments for rent, and a robust relationships section is not so well-known as a site to find a job. Craigslist.org is just that website.
In searching for a job, full-time, part-time or even a temporary position Craigslist is not to be ignored in your job search plan.
In searching Craigslist for a possible job opening you will immediately notice the information is grouped by cities. To reach the city you’re looking for do a Google search: Craigslist (Name City). By basing the ads by city this helps local buyer and sellers, but job hunters who are looking for jobs over a wider area will run into some issues. Moreover, if you don’t happen to live in a city listed you’ll have to search the nearest listed metropolitan area.
Performing a search for all the cities you might be willing to work can be a time-consuming process. Also, if you are not diligent in searching Craigslist daily for possible job openings you could miss possible opportunities. On occasion a job is listed for a limited amount of time so this could also limit you chances of applying for the job and being considered.
Getting the most out of Craigslist in your job search can be done easily through three easy steps.
1. Find the right keyword phrases that describe the position you might be looking for. For example your last job was as a “customer service manager.” So your list of keyword phrases will be; customer service, customer service manager, manager, (the industry you worked in), management, and helping customers. If in scrolling through Craigslist’s employment section, you’ll come across other keywords you can add to your list.
2. Get a Craigslist reader. It’s free from Motion Technologies. (motionT.com) It will allow you to search multiple cities and receive any new job postings will be sent to you by email. These features will give you prompt information and save you a great deal of time.
3. Once you have the software downloaded you can start your search. Start with the keywords you previously selected in the search box in the upper left side of the Craigslist page. Your search can be customized to include various cities and even nationwide job postings. Also, part-time jobs are listed in a separate category.
When you find a job posting you qualify for, carefully follow the instructions in applying as outlined in the posting. Many will have a deadline so get your information sent in as early as possible.
